How to link to a file stored on Amazon S3

The first step is to sign up for an Amazon S3 account. You can do that by heading over to amazon.com/s3  .

Once you have an account you can use the web interface by clicking on the S3 button in your dash board, but what I found to be much easier is to use an ftp client for Mac computers I like Transmit.

To set up S3 to work with transmit you need to get a password and secret key. You can access those from the S3 dashboard by clicking on your name at the top right and selecting “Security Credentials” then select “Access Keys”

In transmit select the “A S3” tab for Amazon S3 and enter in your Access Key ID and Secret.

To add a new file right click and create a new bucket. A bucket is kind of like a folder.

Upload the files that you want to share. Right click on the file go to get info. Change the read permissions to World then right click again and select URL.

To save a folder the easiest way to do it is to create a zip file of the folder you want to share and then upload that as a file into your bucket.

  1. This is great and I’d give anything to see some of the ‘magic trick’ thing you’re talking about but I don’t have a MAC. I have a PC and I want to use Filezilla.
I’ve spent 2 days trying to figure this out.
    Why is AWS so difficult?

    • You should also be able to accomplish this with FileZilla. I have no idea why AWS is so difficult. It has even stumped some big companies out there who have made mistakes in using AWS… So be sure to double check all of you settings.
